900-year-old Ceramic Dish Sells for $26.7 Million in Hong Kong

A 900-year-old Chinese Song dynasty ceramic dish has just sold for $26.7 million at a Hong Kong auction. Breaking records for Song Dynasty ceramics sold at auction, the dish fetched three times its pre-sale estimate.
According to Sotheby’s, eight clearly motivated bidders were competing for the Ruyao washer for 15 minutes before one bid sealed the deal at $26.7 million. This price, which was three times the pre-sale estimate, surpassed the previous Song Dynasty ceramic record, which was set in April 2008 when a vase sold for HK$67.5 million.
The flower-shaped ceramic bowl came from a private Japanese collection and according to Sotheby’s “was arguably the most desirable piece of Ru official ware remaining in private hands.”
