Andrei Smirnov’s Film Named Best Russian Movie at Nika Awards Ceremony

The Nika Awards took place in Moscow on April 8 and director Andrei Smirnov’s “Zhila-Byla Odna Baba” was named Best Russian Movie.
“Zhila-Byla Odna Baba” translates to “Once Upon a Time There Was a Woman” and the film marked Smirnov’s return to directing after a 32-year break. Chronicling the life of an illiterate Russian peasant woman, the film takes place between 1909 and 1921 detailing the protagonist’s private life along with major historical events in Russia. The movie also won the award for Best Screenplay and its star Darya Yekamasova walked away with the award for Best Actress. Roman Madyanov, who also had a role in Smirnov’s film, took home the award for best supporting actor.
Other winners at the Nika Awards included Mikhail Krichman for best cinematography, Yelena Lyadova for best supporting actress, Sergei Garmash for best actor and actor Oleg Basilashvili who took home the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Nika Award is a prestigious annual ceremony held by the Russian Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences. Established in 1987, the Nika Awards were modeled on the Academy Awards and it is considered the main national film award in Russia.
