Hitching Post

Ten years ago, Santa Barbara wine country received its Hollywood moment in a big way when Alexander Payne used the stunning seaside city as a shooting location for his bachelor wine tasting movie, Sideways. Who can forget Paul Giamatti's most famous line? "If anyone orders merlot, I am leaving!" he declared. "I am not drinking f***ing merlot!" In addition to the film's famous faces, each of the locales featured became characters themselves. One predominant "character" was The Hitching Post II—a frequent hangout for main characters Miles [Giamatti] and Jack [Thomas Haden Church] because the waitress Miles coveted, Maya [Virginia Madsen] happened to work there. We sat down with Frank Ostini, the chef and winemaker at Hitching Post II, to talk Sideways, its 10th anniversary, behind-the-scenes moments and, of course, merlot.

Things to Do in Toronto to Escape the Toronto International Film Festival

Toronto gets crazy when the Toronto International Film Festival rolls into town. Not only are some of the most Oscar-buzz worthy movies showing, but the entire town erupts into madness. Movie stars, producers, directors, screenwriters, and journalists all float from movie to movie, restaurant to bar, and shop to gallery to soak in the madness. It can be both invigorating and suffocating. If one wants to take a break from his/her movie packed schedule and see this decidedly beautiful, posh, and metropolitan town they can do so rather easily, as the majority of things to see remain within walking distance from one another.

Savannah

When you think of Savannah, Georgia, you might already have a vision of Mint Juleps, sweet tea and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Though Savannah is the oldest city in America and comes with a distinctive old world, old money pedigree, it's younger—and more fun—than you'd suspect. Sure, there are those that will go for the trolley tours, honey trapping at the Savannah Bee Company and exploring the stately homes of past residents like Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low, or checking out the Central of Georgia Railway roundhouse complex (the oldest standing antebellum rail facility in America), but there are others who will go for a glimpse of the past while enjoying the present. Thanks to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), hotelier Richard Kessler at one outrageous St. Patrick's Day parade, among others, Savannah has a whole new, youthful groove. Here is what you'll experience when you go down south to this stunning port city.

Rob Floyd

Rob Floyd is a man who knows his libations. Floyd has been an influencer on the mixologist scene since 1989, designing cocktails for the Emmy’s, Grammy’s and Oscar’s. After running the bar at Chateau Marmont for eight years, he then joined the opening team of the SLS Hotel to focus on The Bazaar by Jose Andres, before heading to the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood to act as lead at the Library Bar. This led him to his current home, Santa Monica's members-only club 41 Ocean, as National Director of Mixology. Along with being one LA’s top men behind a bar, he is currently on a national radio show with Chef Jamie Gwen, composing new creations and sharing tips with listeners. Floyd also created a popular educational tasting series “Cocktail Theatre,” a cocktail show, described as “The History Channel meets The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” performed throughout the country, to sold-out crowds in Vegas, with tickets selling out months in advance. Once a month 41 Ocean relinquishes its members-only rule, offering "Cocktail Theatre" a select crew of revelers. Trust us though, it's a hard experience to describe: you have to live it to believe it (if you think we're joking, just ask the scantily dressed male fairy walking around the club, though he may, in all likelihood, just grunt at you). We sat down with Floyd to pick his brain about the best libations in LA, the City of Angels thriving mixology scene and his baby, Cocktail Theatre.

Howard Murad

Once upon a time (a few weeks ago, to be honest) our skin was in disrepair. We tried everything in our medicine cabinet to fix our clogged pores, but nothing seemed to work. Desperately, we made a last ditch effort with Murad's Hydrating Toner, which we were initially suspicious of. What did it do? Would it work? Who cared—we needed help. It was the smartest thing we could have done, without even knowing why. In days, our skin healed, but we were perplexed as to why, and so turned to the man himself—Dr. Howard Murad—for answers.
