Sting Sails to Broadway On ‘The Last Ship’ Next Fall
Rock-star legend Sting admitted that he’s had a love for musicals since he was young and listened to his mother play theatre soundtracks on repeat, so it was only a matter of time before he dipped his toes into the sea of Broadway. The Last Ship comes to Broadway next fall after a trial run in Chicago. The play and music were written and composed by Sting—his first original work in nearly a decade. Wicked‘s Joe Mantello will direct the dramatic musical.
The Last Ship is an ode to Sting’s life in the English shipbuilding town of Wallsend. It illustrates the troubles of middle class working families in the small community. Drawing from his own memories, Sting told Forbes that the play is a “social history, an allegory of what might have happened.”
Though the successful musical frontman made it his goal to escape that daunting life, he still feels drawn to his past. “It’s been very important for me to go back to this landscape that I still dream in,” he revealed. “Investigating what happened with my family allows me to understand why I think the way I do, why I behave the way I do.”
After seeking approval from people in Wallsend, Sting went forward with his project. The title album hit stores last month and the highly anticipated musical will grace the Broadway stage in the Fall of 2014.
