To celebrate National Clam Chowder Day earlier this week, we have rounded up some of the best places to try the creamy New England version here in Boston. Here’s a look at five haute spots.

1 Jerry Remy’s Sport Bar and Grill

There is nothing quite like a hot creamy bowl of homemade clam chowder and that's just what you will get at Jerry Remy's. It takes three hours for the flavors from the chopped Ipswich clams, diced potatoes, rendered salt pork, fresh heavy cream, onions, and celery seasoned with Tabasco, bay leaves and lemon to come together, but when they do, it's a home run over any New York red version.

2 The Fours Restaurant & Sports Bar

If you prefer your chowder thick, rich and creamy, The Fours Restaurant & Sports Bar does it best. This hearty version is almost so thick you can stand your spoon up straight in it. We love ours with a dash of Tabasco for just the right amount of heat to top it off right.

3 Legal Sea Foods

Legal’s made a name for clam chowder in Boston when it first arrived on the restaurant scene nearly 50 years ago. Since then, it has drawn crowds from around the world for its infamous bowls filled with tender clams and chunks of potatoes.

4 Union Oyster House

The Union Oyster House has been a favorite of local Bostonians for decades dating back to President John F. Kennedy, who used to come here every weekend. There is even a booth dedicated upstairs in his honor. There is nothing quite like sitting at the oyster bar and enjoying some freshly shucked oysters over a cup of creamy chowder at the oldest restaurant in continuous operation in the country.

5 Rye Tavern

Not all clam chowders are created equally. If you haven’t been to Rye Tavern yet, you will understand what we mean once you have indulged. Located south of Boston in Plymouth, this haute spot is worth the drive for a hearty bowl that starts with a bottom layer of bacon mashed potatoes covered in creamy clam chowder topped with a decadent indulgence of fried clams. Trust us, you haven’t seen clam chowder quite like this.
