Tom Ford makes waves–and very stylish ones at that– whatever he does and wherever he goes. In September  during New York Fashion Week he forged ahead with his plan to show his Fall/Winter 2016 collection during the season when consumers actually wear it. As if being a top-flight fashion designer isn’t enough, Ford, of course, has won kudos for his directing prowess (A Single Man). Now comes his latest movie, called Nocturnal Animals, a psychological thriller starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal, which earned raves since its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Adams and Gyllenhaal star as a divorced couple discovering some pretty uncomfortable truths about each other and themselves, as they explore the thin, often blurry lines between love and cruelty, and revenge and redemption. In its review, The Guardian called the film “a skillful synthesis of the mood of Hitchcock, the skewed reality of Lynch and Kubrick’s obsessive attention to detail.”

Last week following a special presentation that waspart of the 2016 Variety and AARP Movies for Grownups Screening Series, Variety’s Jenelle Riley, moderated a Q and A with the stars. Here’s what they had to say about the movie.

Tom Ford on the film’s plot and theme: “What spoke to me about the story was the fact that it’s about finding people in your life you care about – your soul mates – and not letting them go. In today’s culture we seem to throw things away and throw people away. It’s about holding onto life. That’s what drew me in.”

Amy Adams on her character: “I found the script very compelling and the character was something I hadn’t seen before. It seemed nearly impossible. It had a theme of loss of oneself, loss of love, and loss of loyalty. It all came together in a way I knew I had to do it.”

Jake Gyllenhaal on his character: “I was completely drawn into the screenplay – I was so moved. It was the story Tom told me that got me. And the role offered this strange thing for me: It was a character who had no power. I had played characters who had been completely in control.”

Amy Adams on director Tom Ford: “Tom allows for each actor to have their own process. We all work differently and he allowed each actor to find themselves. It takes flexibility and he’s detailed and creates worlds that are beautiful you can completely lose yourself in. That’s really wonderful.”
