London’s Favorite Jellymongers Bompas & Parr Take On Shakespeare
Named by the Independent as one of “The 15 people who will define the future of arts in Britain”, Sam Bompas and Harry Parr are artists, foodsmiths and most famously jellymongers. Their latest installation, entitled The Waft That Woos, is a labyrinth fuelled by an aromatic “love potion” set in the historic Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon, just outside London.
The powerful love potion is formulated using a concoction of natural perfumes blended with the only known aphrodisiacs, phenethyleamine and yohimbine (you absorb it though your lungs and eyeballs). The powerful scent will lead visitors through the mirrored maze where a sensual surprise awaits them at the core.
The installation is inspired by Shakespeare’s light-hearted romantic comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor, which is currently running at the theatre, and plays with the themes of love and confusion.
Sam Bompas says of the project, “‘The Merry Wives of Windsor is a comic misadventure, a romantic pursuit where tricks are played and visual misunderstandings occur and those are the kind of things that we’ve tried to recreate with our infinity mirror maze. We’ve designed the maze with pleasure in mind, but we do hope that The Waft That Woos will give people a tangible Shakespearian experience which will enhance their enjoyment of the play, exploding narratives, characterization and criticism to an architectural and inhabitable scale.”
The Waft That Woos runs until April 7, 2013.
