As September approaches, we think it’s only appropriate that you lift and glass and toast with a drink that embodies and embraces summer itself: the margarita. Whether you’re opting for a more traditional take on the classic tequila and lime drink, like the libation you’ll find at Petty Cash Taqueria, or an innovative take on a classic, such as the Salt Air Margarita at The Bazaar, we assure you that the five margaritas topping our list are easily the best you’ll find in Los Angeles. Cheers!

1 The Bazaar's Salt Air Margarita

Darko Zagar
The always innovative Jose Andres' margarita isn't just topped with salt—it's topped with salt air. Yes, you heard that right. It has to be seen (and tasted) to be believed.

2 Red O's The Benjamin

The Benjamin—the divine margarita at Rick Bayless' upscale Mexican eatery Red O— will cost you 100 big ones—and it's worth it. You'll find three types of extra anejo tequila—Gran Patron Burdeos, Partida Elegante and Herradura Seleccion Suprema— as well as a special cuvee of Grand Marnier, fresh squeezed Mexican lime juice, organic agave syrup and lime sorbet ice cubes topped with Louis XIII Cognac and blood orange "caviar" and edible gold flakes on the rim. Yep, it's all about the Benjamin, baby.

3 The Purista at Gracias Madre

Eric Wolfinger
The Purista, Gracias Madre Beverage Director Jason Eisner's take on a classic margarita, is for the, well, margarita purist. The libation at this lovely Mexican specific vegan eatery contains tequila reposado, agave, lime, orange bitters, and a sweet orange salt rim. Don't be shy: request that it be made spicy or with mezcal for an extra smokey kick.

4 The Sangria Margarita at Border Grill

Margaritas, traditionally, have fresh lime, tequila and triple sec, but why be boring? Susan Feniger certainly isn't, so you should expect that she'd take things up a notch at her downtown eatery, Border Grill. Order up the fruity Sangria Margarita—Sauza blanco, Spanish sangria, fresh orang, lime, melon and pineapple—for something different.

5 Petty Cash Taqueria Margarita

As fashioned by mix master Julian Cox, the margarita at Walter Manzke's Petty Cash Taqueria is both unexpectedly cool and delicious. Take your pick of tequila or mezcal and soak up the citrus-spiked agave curacao flavor.
