TOY at Hotel Gansevoort: Time To Play

It’s all fun and games at TOY at Hotel Gansevoort in the Meatpacking District. The space has rotated between a few Asian themed eateries over the years, but the energy behind TOY owners, twins Daniel and Derek Koch, makes it look like this one will have some staying power.

TOY is praised for its ambiance and unusual, tasty foods prepared by Executive Chef Doron Wong, a protégé of Susur Lee of Top Chef Masters. The restaurant consists of four areas: an indoor/outdoor oyster bar, an outdoor dining area, a two-level dining room and a private dinning room. At first sight, you may think that TOY is a nightclub due to the elevated DJ booth and silkscreen photo of a tattooed Japanese model, but that fun doesn’t start until later. It’s all about the food and fun cocktails (complete with twisty straws!) for now. The modern Chinese and Japanese influences do not stop at the décor; the menu consists of sharable Asian inspired plates including Shrimp ‘toast’ Cigars with Shitake Mushrooms and Coral and a Long Bone Short Rib with Szechuan Black Pepper Sauce. In addition to their menu, the Oyster and Sushi Bar holds a variety of shellfish and sushi rolls.

Known for their tenure at MPD Restaurant and for raising the bar on brunch with their signature Day & Night lifestyle concept, the Koch brothers aim to deliver with TOY a multifunctional dining establishment, combining the high level of service standards they’re known for with a fresh, playful take on the intersection of dining and entertainment/nightlife—and plenty of playtime.
