As one of Andy Warhol’s most famous paintings, Double Elvis is expected to go for $50 million when it heads to auction in May. Sotheby’s said that the painting, which was done in 1963, demonstrates Warhol’s obsession with fame, public image and celebrity.
In the painting, Presley is wearing a cowboy outfit and toting a gun in his right hand. An expert from Sotheby’s noted, “Presley is depicted as a Hollywood icon of the sixties rather than the rebellious singer who shook the world of music in the sixties.”
