$450,000 Damien Hirst Painted Piano

On November 15, the Museum of Contemporary Art celebrated its 30th Anniversary and many Hollywood stars came out to the event, including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Eva Mendes, Lady Gaga, and Pharrell Williams. During the evening’s auction, a rotating pink Steinway piano painted by artist Damien Hirst was sold for an impressive $450,000 to art dealer Larry Gagosian.

The evening featured galleries filled with Warhols and Pollocks at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art which held the lavish event to raise money for the institution. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the performance art piece titled “the Shortest Musical You Will Never See Again” orchestrated by Francesco Vezzoli and starring Lady Gaga on the piano who sand and played her new single, Speechless, on the now infamous pink Steinway piano painted by Damien Hirst.

The pink piano was colorfully painted with butterflies designed by Hirst and Gagosian didn’t take long to make it his own. For a whopping $450,000, the piano is now the property of Gagosian, and the hat which Lady Gaga wore during the evening’s performance will be up for auction online later this week. No word yet on how much that item will go for, but we’ll certainly keep Gagosian in our sights over the next few weeks to see what he adds to his collection.
