Sherry Yard Bids Farewell to Spago to Open Bakery

According to the Los Angeles Times,  the lovely executive pastry chef of Wolfgang Puck’s dining group, Sherry Yard will be saying farewell to Spago to open her very own epic bakery. Yard will be teaming up with Sang Yoon of Lukshon and Father’s Office to recreate one of the most legendary bakery operations ever, the old Helm’s Bakery in Culver City.

Back in 1969, the well-known bakery closed its doors, leaving many in awe of disbelief. The two came up with the idea to open a bakery separately. For years, Sang had plans to open a bakery and after hearing Yard’s interest of owning her own bakeshop, he didn’t let the opportunity pass him without making the reigning queen of Los Angeles desserts his business partner.

“He just grabbed my arm and said, ‘Oh my god, I’ve had plans to do a bakery there for the last two years and just couldn’t find the right partner. You were at the top of my list but I never dreamed you’d be interested,” Yard told the LA Times.

The dynamic duo plan to open the 10,000 square-foot bakery sometime next September, but in the meantime are in hopes of serving some of their breakfast foods, early next year at Father’s Office in Culver City. The new bakery will include a full line of breads and pastries, along with a café that will serve breakfast and lunch. As to whether the new bakery will remain Helm’s or not, it is unclear. With Yard’s departure from Spago after 19 years, Della Gossett of Charlie Trotter’s will take over the dessert menu.
