Jamaican-American reggae artist Shaggy emerged in the early ’90s and has proved to be one of the biggest crossover success stories in dancehall reggae. One of Shaggy’s first singles, “Oh Carolina,” was a hit overseas. Later he went on to perform a duet with Maxi Priest called “One More Chance,” which landed Shaggy a lucrative deal with Virgin Records in the early ’90s.
His debut album, Pure Pleasure, was released in 1993. Shaggy first hit big in the United States in the mid-’90s with Boombastic. The title track sold more than a million copies and peaked at No. 1 on the R&B charts. The album reached platinum status and spent a full year at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Reggae Albums chart and won Shaggy a Grammy award for Best Reggae Album in 1995. Multiple crossover hits followed with success both in the United States and overseas and in 2002 Mr. Lover Lover: The Best of Shaggy, Vol. 1 was released. In 2007 he released Intoxication which also hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart.
