Berkely Studio Pitches Ideas for Bay Bridge

An inspired studio at Berkeley including Oakland architect and Berkeley professor Ron Rael, came up with an idea they called, “the condos on the Bay Bridge.” Take a look at the example in the photo above. The studio also produced some more ideas for the the Bay Bridge’s eastern span, headed by professors Marc L’Italien and professor Fred Schwartz. These ideas include an extension of the Bay Trail, a space for farming, and a large hotel embedded in the bridge’s structure. Although it’s not likely that any of these ideas will take flight right now, L’Italien thinks things might have been very different if we could do it all over again: “I really believe that if a choice was being made today, we’d be looking at the alternative of salvaging the bridge a lot more than in the ’90s.”
