What Made Him Haute: Known for his delectable and unpretentious food, Chef Michael Schwartz is the owner of one of the most celebrated restaurants in Miami, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink in the Design District. Throughout his career Schwartz has received critical acclaim from top publications, and he was a 2009 winnter for the James Beard Award for Best Chef: South, and he was up for the award again in 2010. Since the age of 16, Schwartz has been fascinated by the art of cooking. He revolutionized the Miami culinary scene in 1994 with the opening of the South Beach landmark Nemo. Today, he continues to dazzle diners, who flock to his casual neighborhood restaurant to indulge in his special brand of organic farm-to-table cuisine.

What Makes Him Haute Now: Following his leap from local legend to nationally-renowned, James Beard Award-winning chef, Michael Schwartz has compiled the best of his local-style, ingredient-driven culinary mastery into his debut cookbook, MICHAEL’S GENUINE FOOD: Down-to-Earth Cooking for People Who Love to Eat.

In accordance with Schwartz’s penchant for locally-sourced, innovative, and vibrant dishes, the book will showcase the cornerstones of his talents, including approachable ways to prepare the best of your fresh, local ingredients. Co-written with Jo-Ann Ciunculli, seasoned cookbook author, the book promises to be a go-to book filled with timeless, savory recipes. Additionally, the book will include information, especially valuable for those of us in South Florida, on how to shop locally and seasonally at the farmer’s market and how to make the most of any meal.

For those who are already a Michael’s Genuine Food follower, signature dishes from the restaurant will be featured in the cookbook, including delicious favorites such as caramelized onion dip with thick-cut potato chips, jumbo lump crab cakes with carrot butter sauce, braised chicken with apricots, green olives and herbed couscous, slow-roasted boneless short ribs with Romesco sauce, and banana toffee panini. Besides these local favorites, recipes will cover a large span of tastes to include everything from quick, shareable snacks to one-pot family-style Sunday dinners.

In celebration of the book’s debut, Schwartz will be on the road for a series of promotional events that begins in New York City. Afterwards, he will head on home to Miami with his first official South Florida signing of the book on Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Books & Books, located at 265 Aragon Avenue in Coral Gables. Following the signing, a locally-prepared potluck dinner will be held in true Michael’s Genuine style. Additionally in South Florida, Schwartz will be venturing into Broward and Palm Beach Counties with cooking demonstrations at Publix Apron Strings Cooking schools at their Boca Raton location on Friday, March 11 and their Plantation location on Saturday, March 12.
