Halloween is a time of parties, costumes and—even better—special, spooky events. Here are our picks for the top five Halloween events every Angeleno will scream about this year.

1 Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Live

The Hollywood Bowl is one of our favorite L.A. institutions. When you add in the great Disney flick "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" AND a live performance by Danny Elfman, well, it just doesn't get any better. Elfman, along with original cast members including Catherine O'Hara (Sally), Ken Page (Oogie Boogie) and Paul Reubens (Lock), sold out lightning quick for its first two days, enough so that guests who weren't in the know might be able to snag tickets for its final performance on Oct. 30 (the event runs from Oct. 28-30). This live recreation follows the earnest-but-misguided adventures of Jack Skellington, Halloween Town's beloved Pumpkin King, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday. Against the advice of Sally, a lonely rag doll who has feelings for him, Jack enlists three mischievous trick-or-treaters - Lock, Shock, and Barrel - to help him kidnap Santa Claus. The concert is produced by Laura Engel & Richard Kraft, Tim Fox & Alison Ahart Williams and Andrew Hewitt & Bill Silva Presents, in association with Disney Concerts, the team that recently presented the highly-acclaimed "The Little Mermaid in Concert," starring Sara Bareilles and Rebel Wilson.

2 Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

Haunted Hayride
Los Angeles Haunted Hayride returns to its darker and more disturbing roots with this year's freaky theme, Secret Society. The Secret Society will unveil two different experiences, Elite or Deranged. Your status will choose your path and experience throughout this 30-acre, live attraction. For the first time ever, Hayriders will leave the safety of their wagons to confront their secret society initiation on foot, closer than ever to the inhabitants of the corn maze. Hayride regulars may recognize some ghosts of Hayrides past which will benefit them in making it to the end of their initiation. If you think this sounds scary, you'd be right --- but who doesn't love a thrill? The Haunted Hayride goes through Halloween night, Oct. 31.

3 Queen Mary Dark Harbor

The Queen Mary/Dark Harbor
The Queen Mary is one of our favorite annual Halloween traditions because it mixes fabricated horror with real-life macabre. The ship, which is docked in Long Beach Harbor, offers a plethora of maze and attractions, around and inside the watercraft. Here's where the spooky reality comes in: the ship is actually haunted, and has been named as such by a plethora of publications, naming the Queen Mary as one of the most haunted locations in America.

4 The Tension Experience: Ascension

The Tension Experience/Facebook
The Tension Experience will terrify you. You'll walk through a 24-room maze in Boyle Heights Throughout a 24-room home in Boyle Heights, which has been turned into a maze by Saw series director Darren Lynn Bousman. Nothing will jump out at you, but you WILL go through a quasi-cult brainwashing, talking to 'lost souls' who will relay their personal sufferings...which might hit just a little too close to home.
Various locations in L.A.
