Van Cleef & Arpels Announces the Emergent Art Prize in Dubai

On 13 January, High Jewelry Maison Van Cleef & Arpels announced the finalists in the run up to the Middle East Emergent Artist Prize 2015. The finalists were announced in collaboration with Tashkeel and Design Days Dubai, Van Cleef& Arpels and took place during a conference in the Dubai Mall boutique.

The finalists responded to the call’s theme – ‘Functional and Conceptual Design’ providing representations and interpretations of an exploration of the dynamics between natural and industrial elements inspired by the interplay between form, function and aesthetics.The finalists were chosen from over seventy applicants from a range of counties across the GCC, validating the expansion of the prize to a globally acclaimed status.

Among the applicants were students, college professors, and interior designers. A finalist, Ivan Parati, of Italian nationality, is a Dubai-based Science and Technology teacher of Ajman University, presenting TileTable, a modular coffee table with traditional Islamic elements. Kuwaiti interior designer Loulwa Al Radwan, submitted an Al Sadu inspired concept for a wall hanging piece. UAE based collective Merehan Kika, Maryam Sherif and Sultan Alqasimi produced renderings of the idea Luminous Waves, a set of organic and flexible wood light installations that play with shadows. Jordanian Interior designer Renad Hussein submitted Hourglass Floorlamp, made of glass and adorned with an Islamic pattern.

“At Van Cleef & Arpels, we are dedicated to maintaining the highest level of creativity and craftsmanship, which is mirrored in many of the Maison’s timeless creations. The efforts of the finalists have replicated a similar essence of originality, and so far the competition has replicated this,” said Alban Belloir, Managing Director Van Cleef & Arpels Middle East & India. “We look forward to appointing the winner with the prize to L’ECOLE Van Cleef & Arpels, whilst unveiling the final piece at Design Days Dubai.”

The winning artwork will be unveiled at the Van Cleef & Arpels stand during Design Days Dubai, March 15, 2015, the world’s most diverse design fair that showcases local, regional, and international collectible modern and contemporary design pieces.

The winning artist will be the recipient of AED 30,000 to fund the making of their final product, as well as a seven day trip to Paris to attend L’ECOLE Van Cleef & Arpels where tuition will be provided by creators of the timeless and exquisite creations of the Maison.
