The front page of Gjelina’s menu states that it supports “local, sustainable & organic practices whenever possible” which is a clear indication given its mouth-watering dishes and always packed interior. Celebrities who believe in healthy living flock to Travis Lett’s haute Venice eatery as much for its fresh, organic ingredients as they do they stellar squash blossom, zucchini and garlic pizza. Just try and stay away.
Head Chef and wwner Sandy Gendel has a hit in his organic Laurel Canyon eatery, Pace. The cozy spot features pasta dishes, salads with seasonal produce and ciabatta-crust pizzas all with ingredients hand-picked from local farmers markets. It’s wonder Zac Efron, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith are all fans. As for why John Mayer took Katy Perry on a date here? That one’s a no-brainer.
3 The Silver Trumpet
Not only is the Silver Trumpet in a beautiful location – it’s located on the lobby level of the Wyndham Orange County but the food is superb, as well. The glass, chrome and wood décor overlooks a hidden lake in Costa Mesa, just steps away from the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Chef Ben Diaz, a graduate of France’s celebrated Cordon Bleu, creates dishes using free-range and organic ingredients. Make sure to indulge in at least one of the desserts, be it the Butterscotch Pot de Crème or the Buttermilk Cobbler; either way you can’t go wrong.
The Wilshire prides itself on utilizing the best of local Californian ingredients to make its men of “New Urban Cuisine.” Executive Chef and “Top Chef” alumni Nyesha Arrington even pays tribute to her establishment’s organic sensibility by using the words market’ and ‘farm’ to describe several of her dishes. Definitely indulge in the Seared Maine Diver Scallops with celery root, apple slaw, black truffle and green garlic, as well as her scrumptious Butter Poached Maine Lobster with veal sweetbreads and edamame.
5 The Nirvana Grille
You may be in foodie heaven after a meal at the Nirvana Grille. This Laguna Beach eatery serves a menu completely composed of all natural meats that are free of hormones, as well as offering organic free-range Mary’s poultry and sustainable seafood. Executive Chef Lindsay Smith-Rosales’ has received rave reviews for her “California Clean” mixture of Latin, American and French-infused food, of which the Coriander Crusted Pacific Swordfish is a delicatable prime example.
