If Puerto Rico is on your winter itinerary, check out the newly opened Palmas Del Mar Yacht Club along the island’s southeast coast. It’s the latest high-end marina to come under the management of Island Global Yachting (IGY).
If you’re not familiar with IGY, it’s a company that has made great strides in its five short years of existence. It specializes in acquiring and managing luxury-yacht marinas and the real estate properties that surround them. The idea is that a marina is more than just a floating parking lot for yachts; it should be a destination unto itself, with concierge services and other amenities you’d expect of a resort. Indeed, among the handful of marinas throughout the Caribbean and the United States that IGY operates, there are boutiques, restaurants, bars, even business centers within walking distance of the slips.
As for Palmas Del Mar Yacht Club, it’s part of the Palmas Del Mar resort in Humacao, 45 minutes outside of San Juan. The resort features a Sheraton Four Points hotel and casino, dozens of shops and restaurants, two golf courses, 22 tennis courts (reportedly the most in the Caribbean), an equestrian center and villas, among other things. The marina itself features 158 slips for yachts ranging from sportfishermen to 175-foot megayachts. Both power and sailing yachts can be accommodated, since there’s deep enough water — 14 feet — in the slips. For the convenience of any yachts arriving from the nearby British Virgin Islands, customs and immigration services are on call. Also beneficial are in-slip fueling and pump-out services, plus on-site provisioning and a chandlery.
Furthermore, Palmas Del Mar Yacht Club is participating in IGY’s Anchor Pass program. Intended for yachts that prefer booking short-term stays at a variety of locations, it allows you to dock at participating IGY marinas during a season or year. Just buy 120 days at the long-term rate, and you get priority reservations at a discount at any Anchor Pass marina plus 365 days you can use at them.
