Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to decrease the size of the labia minora (inner tissues of the female genitalia). Many women have elongated and hypertrophied tissue that is functionally and even aesthetically displeasing. While there are different techniques, the wedge technique is most often utilized in my patients. Our team will work with our patients to determine what their goals are and to ensure we deliver the best, most natural, customized results possible.

HB: Who is a good candidate for labiaplasty?

In my experience, good candidates for labiaplasty or those women who either have functional or aesthetic concerns that can be addressed by reducing the size of the labia to create symmetry and/or functional improvement.

HB: What is the procedure like?

Labiaplasty is performed in an outpatient setting using either local anesthesia or IV sedation. During the procedure, labial tissue is trimmed in a precise manner, and take care to remove just enough excess tissue so that adequate stretch is retained in the remaining tissue. Incisions are placed in concealed locations and closed using dissolvable sutures. I typically complete the entire procedure in one to two hours, depending on how much labial repair is required. Patients will have limited activity for 2-4 weeks after the procedure and most patients require little to no pain medication.

Any time a surgical incision is made, there will be a resulting scar. However, due to the natural folds and wrinkles of the labia, scarring from labiaplasty is easily disguised.

HB: What is recovery like?

Following labiaplasty, there will be some discomfort, swelling, and bruising that can last a few days. I advise my patients to avoid prolonged standing and strenuous physical activity for approximately one week. Pain medication is prescribed, and patients are counseled to use ice packs, wear loose clothing and use absorbent pads for the initial phase of recovery.

My patients can expect to resume their regular routine in a week but should avoid strenuous exercise and sexual activity for about 4-6 weeks.
