LA Philharmonic

The LA Philharmonic opened its 2014/2015 season in a big way: with a gala and concert in celebration of composer John Williams. The program, led by music director Gustavo Dudamel, solely featured Williams’ compositions and included performances by master violinist Itzhak Perlman and a Star Wars video installation by Netia Jones—including new video content for the performance of Williams’ Soundings, first performed at the 2003 opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall—and a unique video installation featuring concept art from the Lucasfilm archive.

Hitching Post

Ten years ago, Santa Barbara wine country received its Hollywood moment in a big way when Alexander Payne used the stunning seaside city as a shooting location for his bachelor wine tasting movie, Sideways. Who can forget Paul Giamatti’s most famous line? “If anyone orders merlot, I am leaving!” he declared. “I am not drinking f***ing merlot!” In addition to the film’s famous faces, each of the locales featured became characters themselves. One predominant “character” was The Hitching Post II—a frequent hangout for main characters Miles [Giamatti] and Jack [Thomas Haden Church] because the waitress Miles coveted, Maya [Virginia Madsen] happened to work there. We sat down with Frank Ostini, the chef and winemaker at Hitching Post II, to talk Sideways, its 10th anniversary, behind-the-scenes moments and, of course, merlot.

Longines

The inaugural Longines Los Angeles Masters was an unqualified success. The four-day event came to a close on Sunday afternoon with eighteen-year-old Belgian rider Jos Verlooy taking the top prize in the Longines Grand Prix, the most prestigious class of the four-day competition. Verlooy emerged the winner with a timing of 38.11 seconds; Steve Guerdat of Switzerland places second, and Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, placed third.
