“The Painting Factory” Celebrates Warhol and Abstraction at MOCA

Inside of Andy Warhol’s legendary Factory in Midtown Manhattan, where Salvator Dali, Mick Jagger, musicians, drug addicts and socialites frequented, a giant art movement was taking seed. This movement is explored in the MOCA’s “The Painting Factory: Abstraction After Warhol,” through works that show abstraction’s blossoming in contemporary art and influence on artists such as Seth Price, Julie Mehretu and Kelley Walker during the post-Warhol years.
This new generation of artists takes note of Warhol’s later works which found a medium between popular culture and high art on screen prints and lithographs. By taking characteristics of minimalism and pop, these artists have revamped abstraction into one of the most expansive forms of contemporary art.
“The Painting Factory” opened on April 29 and runs through Aug. 20 at the MOCA Grand Avenue.
