Q & A with Gown Guru David Meister

Christmas brings good cheer, caroling and a packed calendar. You've got cocktail parties, you've got gala dinners, you've got holiday celebrations. But, here in Hollywood, it's not like the social whirlwind slows after January 1.

Christmas brings good cheer, caroling and a packed calendar. You’ve got cocktail parties, you’ve got gala dinners, you’ve got holiday celebrations. But, here in Hollywood, it’s not like the social whirlwind slows after January 1.

After we deck the halls with boughs of holly, it’s time to walk the red carpet as 2011 brings with it awards season. In addition to the various ceremonies, there are the requisite slew of after parties, not to mention the nomination dinners that precede the events. Which begs the question, with the next several months spent out and about, painting the town red, what’s a girl to wear?

Luckily, David Meister, an L.A. based-designer of exceptionally elegant evening, formal and bridal wear chatted with us about about how to stay red carpet ready. Meister, who’s dressed L.A. luminaries who have wound up on several best-dressed lists, thanks to his chic creations, including Diane Lane, Katherine Heigl, Queen Latifah, Fergie, Felicity Huffman, Tina Fey, Demi Lovato, Drew Barrymore, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Sharon Stone, is a pro a crafting dazzling dresses meant to standout in a crowd. Here’s what he had to say about red carpet glamour.

Are you looking forward to awards season? Awards season is always fun! You never know what is going to happen until the moment someone steps onto the red carpet!

What are some of your favorite dresses that you’ve crafted that have been worn on the red carpet? There are two that stand out. The draped fuschia jersey dress I did for Felicity Huffman for the Emmy’s is quintessential David Meister. The other is the lame gown I did for Sharon Stone. It is modern Hollywood glamour…..Put that on Sharon and it was a home run!

What are a few trends you expect to see on the red carpet this awards season? I think nudes and metallics  will be big. Jewel tones always look great on the red carpet as well. This holiday season women still want to look sexy but they are also starting to wear more gowns than we have seen in past seasons.

Do you have any tips for dresses to choose/dresses to stay away from that will be photographed on the carpet? Most of my gowns have some stretch or knit in them. Key to prevent wrinkles!  Heavy satins and taffetas can be tricky…..nothing worse than getting out of the limo with a lap full of wrinkles.

Truer words have never been spoken.
