Prada Re-Cashmere and Re-Wool Turn the House’s Own Offcuts Into Italian-Made Luxury
Prada turns its own cashmere and wool offcuts into Italian-made sweaters, tailoring and dresses, each with an NFC tag that traces the fiber.

Prada is giving its offcuts a second life. The house has launched Re-Cashmere and Re-Wool, two projects that turn pre-consumer cashmere and wool waste (spinning residues, cutting-room offcuts and surplus fabrics) into new yarn and then into ready-to-wear for men and women. Both collections are made entirely in Italy, in Tuscany and Umbria, and the pieces are shoppable now on prada.com.

The idea grows out of Re-Nylon, the program Prada started in 2019 with a capsule of six bags in ECONYL regenerated nylon, made from waste such as fishing nets and old carpet. A year later, Re-Nylon expanded into ready-to-wear, accessories and footwear. Re-Cashmere and Re-Wool bring the same thinking to two of fashion’s oldest materials.
Re-Cashmere starts with fine spinning residues and cashmere offcuts, including material collected at the Prada Group’s Torgiano facility in Umbria. The pieces are sorted by color, so the finished yarn needs no dyeing. They are then carded and spun into new yarn, entirely in Italy. The source cashmere is certified by the Sustainable Fibre Alliance, and the recycled yarn is certified to the Global Recycled Standard. The result is a range of 100 percent recycled cashmere sweaters for men and women.

Re-Wool draws on a wider pool of material: wool and cashmere offcuts, defective fabrics and cutting-room remnants from across the Prada Group. Non-wool components are removed, the material is sorted by color and wet-shredded, and the fiber is carded and spun again. The finished yarn is 50 percent virgin wool certified to the Responsible Wool Standard, 40 percent recycled wool and 10 percent recycled cashmere. The recycled portion is certified to the Global Recycled Standard. It is used for women’s trousers, jackets, skirts and dresses cut in Prada’s spare tailoring.

Traceability is built into every piece. Each garment carries an NFC tag that links to the Aura Consortium platform. A tap shows where the fibers came from, who supplied them, and where they were processed and made. Like Re-Nylon, each piece also comes with a blockchain-secured digital certificate of authenticity.

Scarcity is part of the design. Because production depends on whatever offcuts and residues are available, quantities are limited, and Prada notes that colors may not be exactly reproduced from one season to the next. The house also says recycled animal fibers can cut CO2e emissions by 75 percent compared with virgin fiber. That figure comes from general industry data (Ecoinvent v3.12), not a lifecycle assessment of these garments.

The pieces don’t look like a sustainability capsule, and that’s the point. A $1,990 crew neck and a $3,950 single-breasted jacket are sold as Prada first and recycled second, the way luxury has to treat circularity if it’s going to last.

They are two Prada projects that recycle pre-consumer cashmere and wool waste, such as spinning residues, offcuts and surplus fabrics, into new yarn for ready-to-wear. They build on the circular approach of Prada's Re-Nylon. Re-Wool yarn is 50 percent virgin wool certified to the Responsible Wool Standard, 40 percent recycled wool and 10 percent recycled cashmere. The recycled fibers are Global Recycled Standard certified. Entirely in Italy, in Tuscany and Umbria, through a network of specialized suppliers. Each piece has an NFC tag that links to the Aura Consortium platform. It shows the fibers' origin, the suppliers and where the materials were processed, and it includes a blockchain-secured digital certificate of authenticity. The five pieces in our edit range from $1,990 for the Re-Cashmere crew neck and cable-knit sweaters to $3,950 for the Re-Wool single-breasted jacket. They are available on prada.com. Production depends on what offcuts and residues are available at any given time. Runs are therefore limited, and a color may not be exactly replicated from season to season.
