New Amsterdam Market Teams Up with Consulate General of Denmark to Bring Cultural Event to the Seaport

Mark your calendar for a taste of Denmark in Manhattan. The New Amsterdam Market (at South Street between Beekman Street and Peck Slip) is a weekly market open every Sunday. With winter approaching, they’ve got tons of seasonal produce and local goodies.

On Nov. 14, they will be joining forces with the Consulate General of Denmark to host a Smørrebrød Tasting event.

What’s smørrebrød? It’s a Danish open-faced sandwich made with hearty Danish rye bread, topped with accompaniments such as spreads, fish, meats, cheese and greens. (In case you want to say it as you eat it, it’s pronounced smoe-bruth).

The event will feature expert visiting chefs, who will showcase more than 10 varieties of smørrebrød.

Proceeds from the event will benefit New Amsterdam Market and the Rye Bread Project. The event kicks off Grains Week, a program of GrowNYC, to educate eaters about the re-emergence of local grains in our food system.
