When we are craving Mexican food, we always get started with an order of fresh guacamole and chips to start the dinner off right. Whether you are craving a simple preparation filled with fresh tomatoes, red onions and cilantro or are looking to be entertained by a tableside preparation, there is no better appetizer to share than this south of the border specialty. Here’s a look at five of the best places in Boston to get your chip and guac fix on.

There is guacamole and then there is Temazcal’s lobster guacamole. If you haven’t had this yet, you are in for a treat. Picture a heaping portion large enough to share, but so good you may not want to filled with all of your favorite flavors (lobster, tomatoes, onions and cilantro) spiced up just a bit with the addition of serrano chili peppers. Served with an oceanfront view and more than 250 tequilas to choose from, you won’t soon wonder why this haute spot is tops.

We told you a couple of weeks ago about the haute new opening of Lolita’s second location in the Fort Point Channel, but Back Bay is where we have been going for years for our guac fix. Lolita takes their guacamole seriously, so much so that they offer three different versions – fresco (tomatoes, roasted serrano, red onion, cilanto and lime), tocino (applewood smoked bacon, pico de gallo and cilantro) and our favorite, especial (jumbo lump crab and Maine lobster served with a garlic herb butter). Trust us, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Papagayo

Even though it’s simply prepared, we still think it’s one of the city’s best. Perhaps it’s the super fresh ingredients or maybe it’s the enormous serving for up to four people, addition of carrots and celery upon request for dipping or just the fun atmosphere at Papagayo that consistently delivers.

Faneuil Hall is a haute spot for tourists in Boston, but when it comes to great south of the border fare, locals know where it’s at. Mija Cantina & Tequila Bar prefers its guac to be fresh and simple made with red onion, jalapeño, cilantro and lime served with a side of salty corn chips. If you need even more guac, try the chimichanga or burrito, which contain a generous amount to hold you over until your next visit.
