Vanessa Grout

Miami native Vanessa Grout is an attorney, real estate investment manager for the real estate arm of Vector Group Ltd. (a NYSE company), and new President of Douglas Elliman Florida. She signed on with the 100-year-old real estate brokerage last year. Although real estate giant Douglas Elliman is a New York-based real estate firm, the company is now working with Grout to expand in the South Florida market. Grout explains, “You can see that New Yorkers make up a higher percentage of Miami’s real estate deals. And Douglas Elliman is a name they know and a name they trust.”

Grout is working to bring the kind of presence Douglas Elliman holds in New York to Miami Beach, where the company has opened an office in the new landmark 1111 Lincoln Road building, in addition to two other South Beach locations.

Where were you born ?
Miami Beach
How long in Miami:
Mostly my entire life – I’m a native
South of Fifth
I have multiple occupations, actually. I’m an attorney, real estate investment manager for the real estate arm of Vector Group Ltd. (a NYSE company), and last year signed on as President of Douglas Elliman Florida as we expand into the South Florida market.
Favorite Restaurant:
I am a regular at Joe’s Stone Crab Takeaway. It’s just delightful, and so convenient.
Best Sushi:
The sushi at Zuma is fantastic, and with its unique design, great for any occasion. The ‘set lunch’ will get you in and out on weekdays.
Best Ethnic Food:
David’s Cafe – the best Cuban food in Miami and I love the coffee counter.
Best Italian:
Il Gabbiano – food is outrageous and the waterfront setting provides a beautiful dining experience
Best place for late night dining:
I’ve heard Big Pink is awesome. But to be honest, most nights I’m in bed well before midnight.
Best dessert:
No question – the Date Pudding at Joe Allen with vanilla ice cream
Best place for a romantic date:
I’m definitely the wrong person to answer this!
Best Sunday brunch:
The Forge recently launched a gluttonous new Sunday brunch. This is where I undo any good I’ve done by not eating a late dinner on Saturday night.
Hautest Club/Lounge:
Soho Beach House, the 2nd floor, for its live Latin music – and because sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.
Best place for a power business meeting:
The conference room in my Downtown or Miami Beach offices. I like to focus fully on the matter at hand.
All-around favorite spot in Miami:
South Pointe Park. It has brought a real feeling of community to the neighborhood.
If you have out of town guests, which hotel would you recommend?
The Setai is still the most elegant hotel in town and not your typical South Beach scene.
Favorite shopping venue/boutique:
The Design District offers a great variety of clothing and furniture stores, with plenty of terrific spots to stop for lunch.
Best place to buy Jewelry/Watches:
Alchemist has a remarkable collection of vintage Chanel costume jewelry.
Best Spa:
I’m loyal to the new Bliss at the W and specifically to Sarah Chambers, who is an amazing aesthetician.
Favorite Charity Event:
We sponsor Lea and Roy Black’s annual gala for Consequences Charity and Marc Wachter’s Ocean Drive 5k Run for Mt. Sinai Medical Center– two very different events for equally amazing causes.
Favorite Cultural Event:
Art Basel Miami Beach is the most incredible week of the year… the art, the international visitors, the events – I’m actually motivated to stay up past midnight.
Favorite Cultural Institution:
The New World Symphony and its Frank Gehry-designed home. Whether I have tickets or am watching the soundscape in the park, I am always inspired.
Best Aspect of Miami:
The beach, the weather, the energy? I can’t choose one! Miami is the perfect mix of an idyllic resort community and an international, cosmopolitan city. I am very fortunate to live here.
Best Steakhouse:
Prime 112 – for the steak and the scene. From the patio, I can watch the walk-in traffic into our fabulous new offices at 135 Ocean Drive.
Best Pizza:
The Big Cheese is an old UM staple, and I still drive down to South Miami for a slice in tribute to my college days.
Best Lunch:
Here Comes the Sun in North Miami is amazing, and while the food is beyond delicious, it is also super healthy. Plus, Kenny really knows how to take care of his customers.
Best Gym/Athletic Facility:
The facilities at the Continuum are first rate.
Best Limousine/Driving Service:
I typically prefer to drive myself.
Best Museum/Exhibit:
The Fairchild Tropical Gardens often has an interesting sculptural and visual art exhibition, and you cannot ask for a more gorgeous setting.
Favorite historic/legendary place to see or explore:
Stiltsville, by boat. Most people don’t realize how much local history is here or that this site is actually protected by the national park service – Google it!
