The warm days and starry nights of summer are always packed with things to do: spending a day at the beach, poolside barbeques with the family, and last week included attending Miami Swim Week events. It becomes so easy to get caught up and not take time to enjoy the moment, or just appreciate the laughter and presence of the people that we love. As women, we tend to put the needs of others before our own and this sometimes causes us to undervalue our worth and add unnecessary strains to our lives.
Whenever I find myself feeling a little overwhelmed, I acknowledge it and then make the conscious effort to unwind and let go. After all, how much good am I to my loved ones if I’m not entirely there? Below you’ll find 3 simple steps on how to regroup and promote feelings of peace and serenity:
- Breathe Deeply: Trust me; this work wonders when you’ve been running around South Florida during these blistering summer months. Just stop what you’re doing, close your eyes, and breathe in and out slowly. On the exhale, image that all of your stresses and feelings of disquiet are leaving your body.
- Spend Time with Positive People: Surrounding yourself with girlfriends who radiate warmth and provide continuous words of encouragement can greatly impact your outlook on life. It’s much harder to dwell on the negative aspects of the day when you have a support system to point out all the blessings that you might’ve overlooked.
- Pamper Yourself: This is my favorite way to unwind and let go of all the hectic, day to day emotions. I draw a warm bath, step in, and relax. Sometimes I’ll even light some candles or have music softly playing in the background. I wrap up my bath by lathering on some oil and topping it off with extra moisturizing body lotion. Nothing calms me more than the scent of gardenia & jasmine.
