Puppy Love in Phoenix

They greet you at the door every evening, they enjoy going on long and meandering walks, they wait to be fed … and they’re expensive (but they’re worth it). No, we’re not talking about your girlfriend/boyfriend. We’re talking about your other sig-o — your pet. Celebrate your (other) best friend at these upcoming pet-friendly events in the Valley.

PetSmart Charities PetWalk presented by Purina Pro Plan at Tempe Town Lake
Feb. 20, beginning at 9 a.m.
This festival will include a pet adoption event, 5K and 1-mile walks (for humans and their companions, too!), as well as other fun activities for adults, children and pets. Plus, participation will help raise money for local animal-welfare agencies that work hard to help thousands of homeless pets throughout the state. This event was voted “Best Annual Pet Event” by azcentral.com. Visit petsmartcharities.org for more information.

Yappy Hour at Crave Cafe
Feb. 24, 4 to 7 pm.
Head to Crave Cafe at InterContinental Montelucia Resort for Yappy Hour, an event geared toward social and socially aware pet parents. Guests and their pets will be able to mingle with one another while also supporting a good cause, as admission is $10 but a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Humane Society. We’ll bark to that.

Hike for Animal Rescue at Papago Park
Feb. 27, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Take a 1- to 3-mile hike appropriate for all ages and pets at this event. Rescue groups will be on-site for animal adoptions and to answer questions, and there will also be vendors, live music, contests, a silent auction and raffles. Funds raised will benefit animal rescue efforts in Maricopa County and will go to the Phoenix Animal Care Coalition 911 and the Emergency Medical Fund. All animals must be leashed with ID and rabies tags visible, and all animals must be spayed or neutered. Admission is $20 in advance, otherwise $25, and admission is free for children ages 13 and younger. Register online at pacc911.org.

Fiesta Cluster All Breed Dog Show and Agility Trials at WestWorld of Scottsdale
March 3 through 7, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Thousands of canines from all over the country will meet up in Scottsdale for the Southwest’s largest dog show and compete for top honors in a range of agility trials. This will be a great opportunity to talk to professional breeders and learn more about breeds you’re interested in. All the shows are free to the public to attend, however a $5 parking fee will be charged. Want to know if you can bring your furry friend? Only well-behaved dogs (the standards here are high, people) of AKC registerable breeds and aged 6 months and older can be on the show grounds and must always be on a leash (no flexi-leads allowed). Visit fiestacluster.com for more information.
