According to the International Health, Racquet and Sports Club Association, Texas is second only to California in the number of fitness centers in the state. That means we have no excuse to slack off on our New Year’s resolution to get a tighter tush or cook off our turkey arms. If you are looking for a fitness club that gives you more bang for your buck, try one of these five local gyms that can take you from zero to hero in style.
1 Trophy Fitness Club
Known as the gym that creates a friendly, family-style atmosphere for "everyday people," the folks at Trophy Fitness Club are doing something right. With their four successful Dallas locations and counting, it appears Trophy's future here in North Texas and beyond will be bright. Perhaps it's the immaculate facilities, the multitude of core-fusion classes or the first-class personal training that's reeling them in, but my money's on the fact that they are a membership-free health club. Don't believe me? See for yourself.

A New York import, Equinox has sky-rocketed here in Dallas, opening new locations this year and garnering tons of attention from fitness buffs. The new buzz is about the viPR classes, exclusive to Equinox until 2012 (yipee!) You can always expect a true state-of-the-art facility at Equinox, with spacious pools, helpful staff and a squeaky clean atmosphere. Check out the iPhone ports on the elliptical machines, and the lux Kiehl's hair and bath products in the locker rooms.

3 Liftetime Fitness
As a gym with a limited enrollment rule, you can be sure that at Lifetime Fitness you won't have to wait around for that elliptical machine or squash court. Most locations have rock climbing walls, swimming pools and tennis facilities, and if you are interested in enrolling in a certain program, Lifetime can help you there as well. Check out the T.E.A.M Weight Loss program, 12-week group weight loss class boasting a 90 percent success rate, or work with nutrition experts and dietary coaches to make sure you are eating to get the most out of your workout. And after your routine, don't forget to get your membership pricing on massages, facials and more at the spa.

4 Verandah Health Club
This fitness center inside the Hilton-Anatole is geared toward the individual who loves to work out hard and play hard. With cutting edge machines, including the Kinesis machine, a contraption that almost resembles a standing-up pilates machine, an indoor lap pool, basketball and squash courts, boxing gym and plenty of group classes, it won't be difficult to get your routine down and your heart rate up at the Verandah. But after all the hard work, enjoy yourself at the swim-up bar outside with a cocktail and a friendly conversation with the bartender. Does life get better than this?
