Leonardo Dicaprio

Category: Entertainers

Company: Film

Industry: Appian Way/Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation

What Made Him Haute: The three-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner is one of the biggest superstars on the planet and the fifth highest paid actor in Hollywood. His performance in Revolutionary Road had him primed for another awards season, as he’s up for another Golden Globe. Additionally, his foundation’s commitment to environmentalism also makes him one of the most influential activists in the world.

What Makes Him Haute Now: Risky investment deals can either go sweet or sour, and luckily for Leonardo DiCaprio the gamble he took on his latest film Inception has turned saccharine. DiCaprio agreed to take an up-front pay cut from his usual salary because financiers were uncertain that the expensive film would rake in the big production cost. Instead he agreed to a “first dollar gross” deal, which means that he’d get money from ticket sales and even a cut of the revenue from DVD and television sales. So far the film has made about $570 million and DiCaprio has pocketed about $50 million of that, but as ticket sales pile up so will his cash. Besides earning the most money he’s ever made for a single role, Dicaprio has also gained credibility as a leading man in Hollywood.
