How Long Does Rhinoplasty Recovery Take?
Last reviewed: May 2026 · Haute MD Editorial Team
Most people wear a nasal splint for about 5–10 days and return to desk work after roughly one week. Visible bruising and swelling usually improve over two to three weeks, but the final nasal contour can take one to two years to fully settle — especially at the tip. (ASPS recovery guidance; AAFPRS nasal cosmetic surgery guidance.)
Days 0–7
An external splint and/or internal packing or soft dressing may be used to protect the new shape. If packing is used, ASPS practice-parameter guidance notes it is usually removed within 24 hours; splints are usually removed after 7–10 days. AAFPRS consumer guidance: external sutures (if any) are often removed in 5–8 days; nasal dressings and splints at 5–10 days. Congestion is common from internal swelling even when packing is not used. Keep the head elevated; follow your surgeon's medication and wound-care instructions.
Weeks 1–3
Many patients return to work or school after about a week once the splint is off. Bruising under the eyes is often largely resolved by about one to two weeks. Mild activity may resume around two to three weeks; ask your surgeon before exercising.
Weeks 4–6 and beyond
About half of the swelling is often gone by six weeks, but the nose continues to change. ASPS educational content commonly advises avoiding strenuous exercise for at least six weeks. Practice-parameter guidance: refrain from sniffing and blowing the nose for 3–4 weeks. Protect the nose from impact and sun; if you wear glasses, avoid pressure on the bridge while healing.
Months 6–24
ASPS: initial swelling improves within a few weeks, but it may take up to a year for the new contour to fully refine; swelling can fluctuate and look worse in the morning during the first year. ASPS educational article: full healing can take one to two years; the tip often stays swollen longest, especially after an open approach.
What changes the timeline
Open vs closed technique (more tip swelling is common with open approaches). Skin thickness, extent of bony/cartilage work, grafts, and revision cases. Your overall health and how closely you follow aftercare.
