Celebrity Hair Stylist Kendall Dorsey Offers Styling Tips For Gentlemen
Imagine being tasked with styling the tresses of some of Hollywood’s biggest names. It’s all in a day’s work for Kendall Dorsey, celebrity grooming expert and hair stylist, who has created some of the trendiest looks for A-list superstars from Usher and Yara Shahidi to Nick Minaj, Cardi B and Solange.
We caught up recently with Dorsey to chat about how he comes up with new styles, what inspires him, and a look at this season’s hottest styles for men.
You have a background in fashion but later found your calling in hair styling. Tell us a little about that journey.
I originally studied fashion but was a legal hairstylist doing hair in my dorm. When I graduated college, I got a job as an assistant buyer but migrated toward hair. My first break was with Teyana Taylor. Since then, I have done hair for everyone from Nicki Minaj to Solange Knowles.
How do you come up with new styles?
I was recently working on a project where I did a lot of work with wigs. They were 40-inch, bone straight wigs. I go for lots of movements and shapes. For example, for a song Rhianna was working on, I was able to change her look from curly and put her in long, sleek, shiny hair. I think with my history of fashion and a marketing degree, I use a lot of references to time periods and street style as well. I love to sit and watch the winds, and also do a lot of people watching. Ironically enough, I hone in on people on the streets for inspiration.
Which celebrities would you like to work with whom you haven’t had the chance just yet?
I have a list. There’s something about those Kardashian women [laughs]. Naomi Campbell, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Kidman are a few.
Which project would you say you are the proudest of?
When Nicki Minaj did a campaign for Gucci, I was able to connect with the brand. When you are working with a high-end brand like Gucci, you have to understand textures, tones and time periods. That’s one I would say I am the proudest of. Working with Solange Knowles on her visual album was all about the artistry.
In addition to an impressive roster of female clients, you have created some of Hollywood’s hottest styles for men like Usher. Do you have any styling tips for gentlemen this season?
Fashion is so bold now. A lot of men are using color. You’ll be seeing lots of blonde tones popping up. Fashion is taking a different turn. The voice of fashion is spoken to men in a different conversation now. Men are now using color to show they are bold and masculine. I want to inspire generations to let them know that they can be fearless and bold. Men are gravitating to short, clean cuts. I am doing a lot with tapered sides and a comb-over to give it an exquisite look.
