As we bid farewell to this season’s warm sun and rolling surf, Haute Living Honolulu has opted to sip Mai Tais at sunset, embrace fall fashion, and switch up our usual First Friday routine in favor of something decidedly new. In the spirit of the changing of the seasons, this holiday weekend is all about mixing it up.

Foodies, winos and mango fans made an appearance at the Moana Surfrider Resort & Spa last Friday for the Tree to Table-Mango Throw Down. The mango-centric extravaganza celebrated Hawaii’s top chefs including D.K. Kodama, Donato Loperfido and Nobu Matsuhisa to name a few. Iron Chef, Masaharu Morimoto hosted the culinary contest that pitted the island’s best prepared mango-inspired dishes against each other. Morimoto, local food editor Jo McGarry and the menagerie of guests voted for Best Use of Mango, Best Dessert and People’s Choice.

In Hawaii, sushi is like the ocean — a serious staple in every day life. You can get it nearly everywhere from an haute spot like Sushi Sasabune to 7-11 so you can imagine why it’s such a basic in our daily diets. Narrowing down the Haute 5 Spicy Tuna Rolls in Honolulu was not an easy task as I’d venture to say we have a few dozen noteworthy and seriously scrumptious sushi spots. I did not forget Yanagi, Mitch’s, Cal Rockin’, or Kozu to-go. Here is a select sampling of good old “hole in the wall” and uber haute sushi restaurants that are sure to fill your spicy tuna cravings in Oahu.

Calling all foodie adventurists and music mavens! Aside from the monthly Academy of Art’s Art After Dark hip Honolulu can also enjoy sipping innovative rum cocktails, munching on mango recipes, and taking in live music whether your choice be opera or indie pop. Happy weekend, Oahu!

It was a star-studded weekend in the HNL. A bevy of celebs were in town to support the annual Tag The World charity biathlon held last Sunday, Aug. 22. Tag The World is a non-profit organization that’s mission is to raise awareness and funds for five global concerns at large: Cancer, Africa, Global Green, Children, and Animals. Co-founders Hannah Cornett and Robert Parks-Valleta have found a fashionable and personal way to raise awareness through Tag The World effort.

Got a sweet tooth? Confections can cure a broken heart, are the best remedy for a seasonal cold, will enhance a romantic date, and are simply the best finale to any meal.
