LAX is getting a new facelift. The Los Angeles airport, which hasn’t been touched up in 24 years, is about to receive a $5.5 billion modernization.  The Tom Bradley International Terminal will be rebuilt with new gates for jumbo jets and a grand central hall that will feature restaurants and shopping. A concourse with new gates is set to be built and will connect to Bradley via a sky bridge. A mini-public transit system that ferries flyers around long stretches of the airport and could one day connect to a Green Line extension is also in the plan.

Fentress Architects created the design concepts, which are inspired by the Pacific Ocean and will highlight rooftops that resemble waves. The arches of LAX’s iconic Theme Building is also in the plan. The completion date is set for 2013. The city has spent upwards of $250 million over the past 15 years to develop the plans that are backed by Mayor Villaraigosa and two of his predecessors.
