Russian Conductor Valery Gergiev Heads First U.S. National Youth Orchestra

America’s most talent young musicians, 121 of them to be exact, will form the country’s first National Youth Orchestra—lead by Russian conductor maestro Valery Gergiev.
The inaugural season starts the summer of 2013. Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music institute will choose orchestra players between ages 16 and 19 from across the country. The performers will go through a rigorous audition process to form what the institute is calling “musical ambassadors for the U.S.”
After spending summer 2013 in training, the orchestra will travel to Washington D.C., Moscow, St. Petersburg and London to present its skills.
The conductors are set to change annually. Gergiev currently holds the positions of Director General and Artistic Director of St. Peterburg’s Marlinsky Theatre and principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.
