Originally crafted in Paris in 1839 by Alphonse Giroux, this “Daguerreotype” wooden sliding-box camera is said to be the first commercially produced camera. It was recently discovered by an Austrian auction house. This first commercially produced camera traces back to Germany, and is reportedly in great original condition. It’s now up for grabs along with the 1839 original manual. It’s been signed by Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre, which strengthens its authenticity and value. This treasure will go up for auction in May 2010 at WestLicht Auctions in Vienna, and is expected to go for anywhere between $701,000 and $981,400.
