News | January 26, 2010

Antiques can be the perfect statement piece for any room. Whether your area sports a Victorian theme, or even if you’re stacked with modern furniture, antiques still show that you can appreciate rare unique pieces. Antique lovers know that some of the best ways to snag some of the world’s most valuable and rare antiques is through auctions. Sotheby’s recently sold a Silver Punch Bowl crafted by Cornelius Kierstede in New York between 1700 and 1710. It was originally predicted to go for anywhere between $400 and $800,000. However, bidding opened at $275,000! It started going higher and higher and ended with a mystery collector purchasing the piece for a whopping $5,906,500. The silver punch bowl, which was a part of Sotheby’s sale of Important Americana, descended from the family of Commodore Joshua Loring in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, the Loring-Greenough House, which is now being preserved as a historic site.
