Weekend Update: Ben Affleck is Back as Batman Plus 9 More Highlights From Comic Con 2017

Over the weekend, hundreds of thousands of fans descended upon San Diego for Comic-Con International, a multi-genre entertainment and comic convention held annually in the SoCal city of San Diego. In case you weren’t one of these lucky attendees, here are all the highlights you might have missed from Comic Con 2017.

BEN AFFLECK IS BACK AS BATMAN

Although there was speculation that he wouldn’t return as the caped crusader, Ben Affleck has confirmed he’ll return as the Dark Knight in the upcoming The Batman. “I know there’s this misconception because I didn’t direct it that I wasn’t enthusiastic about it,” he said over the weekend, adding, “It’s f–king amazing. I still can’t believe it.”

WONDER WOMAN IS GETTING A SEQUEL

It’s official: Warner Bros. has revealed that after Wonder Woman broke records at the box office (it is now  the highest grossing summer film, bringing in $389 million domestically), she’ll return for a second spin around the block. Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Wonder Woman Diana Prince.

MICHELLE PFEIFFER IS RETURNING TO THE SUPERHERO UNIVERSE IN ANT-MAN AND THE WASP 

Catwoman Michelle Pfeiffer is returning to superhero world. The stunning star, who first appeared as Catwoman in 1992’s Batman Returns, has joined the cast of Ant-Man and the Wasp as Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp and mother of Hope Van Dyne, who is played by Evangeline Lilly. In the Marvel comics, Van Dyne, wife of original Ant-Man Hank Pym, was one of the first Avengers.

BLACK PANTHER RECEIVES A STANDING OVATION

Only Comic-Con attendees were lucky enough to see a clip from director Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, which stars Chadwick Boseman as the title character, who is assisted by a cast that includes the great Lupita Nyong’o, as well as Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis, but the buzz is deafening considering that the entire room gave this film a standing ovation. Needless to say, no previews are available online—you’ll have to wait along with the rest of us for a sneak peek.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR RELEASES TRAILER

The first U.S. trailer for the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War featuring everyone in Hollywood (we kid) including Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Benicio del Toro, Tom Holland, Anthony Mackie, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Paul Rudd and Don Cheadle is here.

STRANGER THINGS, SEASON 2

This buzz-worthy Netflix show debuted its season 2 trailer, and from the looks of it, the supernatural weirdness is about to get even more wonderful.

WESTWORLD, SEASON 2

Although the new season won’t come out until next year, HBO surprised Comic Con-goers by showing a surprise look of its second season, which stars Sir Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood and James Marsden. 

READY PLAYER ONE

The man himself—Steven Spielberg—is directing Warner Bros.’ big-budget feature of Ernest Cline’s popular dystopian sci-fi novel.

BRIGHT

Netflix is changing the game yet again, showing that it can compete with big blockbuster box office films by debuting its own big-budget fantasy film (albeit for TV) starring none other than Will Smith.

JUSTICE LEAGUE

The DC universe showed off a new trailer for its superhero team-up film co-starring Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa and Eza Miller, with a first look at villain Steppenwolf, played by Ciarán Hinds.
