Haute 100 Update: Golf Tournament to Benefit the Komen Foundation Raises their Fundraising Goal

The Rally For a Cure golf tournament is set to take place this October 1 at Maysville Country Club in Maysville, KY for the 15th year running to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Founded in 1982, the Susan G. Komen Foundation was created as Haute 100 Miami member Nancy G. Brinker’s promise to her dying sister, Susan, to work towards a cure for breast cancer.

For the scores of people affected by breast cancer, whether directly or through someone they know, the event provides an opportunity to raise money towards finding a cure for the astoundingly prevalent disease.

According to Bettsy Kalb, an organizational committee member, the event has steadily been able to raise $10,000 each year– all of which goes directly to the Komen Foundation. This year, however, they are hoping to set their bar a bit higher with a goal of $12,000.

“Last year we were actually over the $10,000 (mark), we were close to $11,000, so each year we just try to up it by $1,000 if we can,” Kalb said.

The event also features a “memory tree”, where those unable to participate in the tournament or sponsor a hole can still contribute in memory or in honor of someone through the purchase of a ribbon to adorn the tree.

“We didn’t originally start this with an intention to honor somebody, it was just something that we felt would be good for the community,” Kalb said. “But it seems like every year … a family member or a friend of somebody has a connection with somebody that has either lost a battle to it or is a survivor.”
