Haute Escape: Why the New Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne Is Miami’s Ultimate Staycation

Haute Living’s Kamal Hotchandani checked in to the newly transformed The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami for a June staycation built around The Sounds of Spa, a Rum Bar tasting, Paralía, Dune Beach Bar and Luma, the resort’s new modern Italian restaurant.

Miami has no shortage of places to check in for a weekend, but only one of them sits on its own island. In June 2026, Haute Living’s Kamal Hotchandani did what the city’s own residents have been rediscovering since December: he skipped the airport and checked in to The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami for a two-night staycation, six months after the resort reopened from a $100 million transformation.

The resort, at 455 Grand Bay Drive on the five-mile barrier island just minutes from downtown, came back with redesigned guest rooms and suites, a completely reimagined spa with a new Spa Garden, new fitness facilities, an elevated pool and beach program, The Club Lounge, the Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center, a new Ritz Kids Club and a dining lineup that now reads like a small restaurant group of its own. An oceanfront king room with Club Lounge access was the base for testing all of it in a single weekend.

The verdict starts with the spa. Hotchandani singles out the spa, and the massage in particular, as one of the best experiences of the stay, and the treatment in question is the resort’s new signature, The Sounds of Spa. The 110-minute journey at The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Key Biscayne opens with a gong to set an intention, moves to an aura cleanse in the Spa Sensory Garden, and continues with a customized CBD massage enhanced by therapeutic tuned singing bowls. A personalized tea-making ritual follows before guests unwind in the Spa Sanctuary, a calming multi-sensory space.

That treatment is a fair summary of what the renovation did to the spa as a whole: thoughtfully designed treatment rooms, couples’ suites, a full-service salon and restorative spaces such as the Journey Lounge, the Spa Sensory Garden and the Spa Sanctuaries, with wellness journeys built around sound therapy and elemental healing. The Spa Sanctuary welcomes guests daily, with services by reservation.

The second half of the staycation was about eating and drinking across the property, and here the resort’s post-renovation ambition is most visible. Where many hotels offer a restaurant and a bar, The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami now counts seven restaurant and bar venues, and Hotchandani made a point of trying the different venues over the weekend.

Rum Bar in the lobby of The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami

Friday evening began at Rum Bar, nestled within the hotel lobby, where modern elegance meets laid-back coastal charm and a private rum tasting for two brings a taste of the Caribbean a few miles south of downtown Miami. Rum Bar is open daily from 3 to 11 p.m.

The terrace at Paralía, the Aegean beachside restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami

Dinner followed at Paralía, the resort’s authentic Aegean beachside restaurant. Blending Greek and Turkish coastal influences and adapting them to Florida’s local seafood and produce, Paralía is open daily for lunch and dinner, with service until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The main terrace at Luma, the modern Italian restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami

Then there is Luma, the headline of the reopening. Named for the Italian word for light, the 310-seat modern Italian restaurant is perched above the Atlantic coastline with sun-lit interiors and sweeping ocean views, and it is led by Executive Chef Patrizio La Gioia, who was born in Paris, raised in Puglia and trained at MICHELIN-starred Per Se in New York and I Portici in Bologna. The menu centers on handmade pastas and a signature Josper oven program that finishes fish, seafood, premium cuts and seasonal vegetables over natural binchotan and oak coals.

Opening-menu highlights included Beef Carpaccio ($28), Tuna Crudo Pizza ($25), Spaghetti alle Vongole ($32), Corn Agnolotti ($48), Sea Bass Puttanesca ($58) and a Josper-roasted Bistecca Fiorentina for two ($165), a 40-ounce prime porterhouse. At the ocean-view bar, the Italiano 75 ($20), Blonde Orange Sgroppino ($19) and Strawberry Negroni ($22) anchor the aperitivo list, and a Dolce Vita gelato and granita cart handles dessert tableside. Luma serves breakfast daily from 7 to 11 a.m., dinner from 5 p.m., and its La Dolce Vita Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Saturday was given over to the water: a daybed at the adult pool with personalized butler service and a welcome Piña Colada or Mojito, then a beachfront dinner at Dune Beach Bar, a casual beach bar by day and a livelier escape by night. The rest of the lineup covers the hours in between: Stefano’s serves wood-fired pizzas poolside, Scoop handles Dolce Vita gelato, and Pura Vida Miami does fresh cuisine and cold-pressed juices from 7 a.m.

The Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge on the ninth floor of The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami

Club Lounge access, on the ninth floor, adds five daily culinary and beverage presentations from breakfast through dessert, and the resort rounds out a stay with a complimentary Tremble reformer class and a Bissinger Handcrafted Chocolatier tasting. For Miamians, there is currently a staycation rate for residents of select Southern states, and new Signature Experiences such as Lunar Glow, an evening of aura cleansing, CBD massage and a candlelit dinner in the Spa Garden, suggest the property is thinking about the weekend guest as much as the week-long one.

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami is at 455 Grand Bay Drive, Key Biscayne; reservations are available at ritzcarlton.com, spa bookings through The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Key Biscayne, and tables at Luma at lumakeybiscayne.com.
