Gucci to Celebrate 90th Anniversary with an Exclusive Exhibition in Kyoto’s Golden Temple
As Gucci fast approaches their 90th anniversary this summer, the world has eagerly waited to see how one of fashion’s biggest names would celebrate. Well, wait no more; for this year’s anniversary, Gucci will be hitting the road to display some if their most valuable pieces in a revered Kyoto temple.
The famous Golden Temple in Kyoto will house extraordinarily rare and unique pieces from Gucci’s archive from June 25 through July 13. Gucci CEO Patrizio di Marco is expected to host the opening of the event with a cocktail function to be followed by an exclusive dinner for celebrities, VIPS, and members of the art community on June 24.
So why did this venerated Italian name choose Japan? The fashion house has said that they are striving to “connect its birthplace, Florence, with its sister city Kyoto through a common tradition of artisanal craftsmanship, a cultural treasure shared by both Italy and Japan.” The event has been generating anticipation and is significant of Japan’s rebound after last month’s devastations that occurred there.
For the highly anticipated event, Gucci has collaborated with Hiroshi Senju, a Japanese painter and Kyoto University of Art and Design president who will be curating two of Gucci’s exhibitions. In October, the exhibit will move to a gallery at the illustrious university to be on display in addition to artisanal works from Florence and Kyoto. In November, the complete exhibition will then be transferred to the Gucci Ginza flagship in Tokyo.
