Pillars of Excellence

Given their similarities, the partnership was a natural fit for both companies. The Six Pillars are the inspiration behind a special, limited-edition partnership between Macallan and Lalique crystal. This year marks the launch of the third edition in the series, thus is based on the Third Pillar. Lalique’s designers bring “The Finest Cut” to life in elegant crystal with platinum and gold leaf accents. Early press for the decanter has it pegged for a major collectors’ item. The Lalique decanter became available in October 2009, and while there are a total of 400 produced globally, only 72 will be for sale in the United States. It is valued at $15,000, available by special order. Grier and Dalgarno worked together closely in choosing the limited edition malt to fill the The Third Pillar decanter, which contains a 57-year-old single malt, aged in casks derived from both types of oak. The age is attributed to the youngest barrel used in the blend.

Silvio Denz, president and CEO of Lalique, says, “Working with the world’s finest single malt has given us the opportunity to design a series of decanters that reflect all the best attributes of our brand—creativity, heritage and craftsmanship.” This past summer, a single 50-year-old bottle of Macallan sold for 11,750 pounds (more than $19,000), the highest price ever paid for that vintage. With limited-edition appeal and a bear market that makes commodities like whisky more attractive than ever, the 2009 Lalique decanter is sure to command attention from investors and whisky lovers alike.
