Hugh Hefner’s Eating Habits According to Playboy Mansion Chef
Ever wondered about Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner likes to chow down on? Want to know if he enjoys early-bird specials or late dining? Find out from the man who cooks the meals for Hefner: William S. Bloxsom-Carter, Playboy mansion chef.
William S. Bloxsom-Carter is no ordinary chef – he’s the director of food and beverage at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. For 25 years he has been catering for Hefner and his parties, serving around 100,000 guests annually.
The 55-year-old says, “It really annoys me when people say I have a cushy job. They think the girls are in lingerie and six-inch heels standing by my desk and waiting for my next commend.” While many people probably have that image, it isn’t necessarily so, according to the chef.
Entry to the gated mansion is by invitation only and you gain admittance by speaking into a rock with a hidden microphone at the main gate. The mansion features a private zoo, pool, games room and manicured lawns.
When it comes to his boss, Carter says Hefner, 85, starts his day with breakfast around 10:30, 11:30 a.m. and eats very healthy. Carter runs a 24-hour operation at the mansion so Hefner’s schedule is often a little different, but typically he’ll have lunch around 5:30 p.m. and has dinner ordered up at 10:30 p.m.
So what does Hefner like to eat? According to Carter, the ultimate playboy “enjoys lamb chops and he has half a grapefruit every day.” Carter adds, “He likes friend chicken with mashed potatoes, which is his mother’s recipe. He’s a Midwestern gentleman, so he enjoys those kinds of foods. He has two piles of mashed potatoes with a poached egg placed in each one. Pretty wild stuff but it’s OK.”
Hefner isn’t the only one around the mansion who gets to enjoy the talents of Chef Carter. “We do cook for the Playmates,” he says, adding, “We want them to feel relaxed and at home, as if they were in their own kitchen. That’s very important to Mr. Hefner.”
Carter has a business degree in air commerce from the Florida Institute of Technology and learned to cook under Gerard Gasparini at the Wee Burn Country Club in Darien, Connecticut. He got the job at the Playboy mansion after answering an advertisement to join a West Coast corporation.
