What Is Microneedling?
Last reviewed: May 2026 · Haute MD Editorial Team
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a device with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body's natural wound healing response and collagen production. It is used to treat acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture, hyperpigmentation, and stretch marks. Radiofrequency microneedling (Morpheus8) combines this process with radiofrequency energy for enhanced skin tightening.
How does microneedling work?
The micro-injuries trigger the release of growth factors and initiate a healing cascade — increasing collagen and elastin production. This remodeling process continues for 4-6 months after each treatment. The channels created also enhance the absorption of topical serums applied during or after the procedure.
What conditions does microneedling treat?
Microneedling effectively treats acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture, hyperpigmentation, melasma (in combination with topicals), and stretch marks. It is suitable for all skin tones.
What to expect during and after microneedling
The skin is numbed with topical anesthetic before the procedure. During treatment you may feel vibration and mild pressure. Immediately after, the skin appears red and feels like a moderate sunburn. Redness typically resolves within 24-48 hours for superficial microneedling and up to 5 days for deeper RF microneedling.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many microneedling sessions do you need?
Most patients need 3-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results. Maintenance sessions every 6-12 months help sustain results.
What is the difference between microneedling and Morpheus8?
Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy, delivering heat to deeper tissue layers for enhanced collagen stimulation and skin tightening. It is more powerful than traditional microneedling and has more downtime.
Is microneedling safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. Microneedling is safe for all skin tones including darker complexions, unlike ablative lasers that carry a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin.
Can microneedling be done at home?
At-home dermarollers are available but are not comparable to professional microneedling. Professional devices penetrate deeper, are more controlled, and are performed under sterile conditions. At-home use carries infection risks.
