If you have heard of porcelain veneers, you probably know they are a way of remaking spaced, uneven, worn down, chipped, or stained teeth. But you probably did not know they are also a way of transforming the shape of your face making it more symmetrical, accentuated, and youthful, like a facelift.

Let’s take a step back. What are veneers again?

Porcelain veneers are super thin layers of porcelain that a dentist with special training applies to your teeth. They are works of art, blending 3D imaging and technology with a dentist’s aesthetic eye to create a beautiful, natural-looking smile. And they are incredibly durable- when well cared for, they can last for decades.

How many do I get?

Dentists usually recommend getting veneers in multiples of two, for the most symmetrical effect. For cost reasons, you do not want to get more veneers than you need to achieve the look you want. That said, you do not want to get too few, or only part of your smile will look upgraded and new. This can be a difficult calculation for patients, and it would help to do a trial smile- either digitally or in-person to see the final results before actually starting any treatment. To plan and visualize the final result is crucial to achieving the best results that you desire.

It starts with a consultation, to discuss your goals, and see what is possible in transforming your smile. It can be a small or big transformation, and even slight changes can give a big result. After checking the health of the gums and teeth, a plan can be made in getting the look you always wanted. Once you agree on the treatment and desired look, the dentist will shape conservatively the teeth for the veneers, and you’ll leave with a set of temporary veneers which is a temporary version of your new smile. This lets you test it out with friends and family members. While you’re in the temporary veneers, a ceramist will be designing and fabricating the handmade porcelain veneers. They are truly works of art and we call them jewelry for the teeth as they are made with passion as no detail is overlooked.

Within a week or two, the permanent veneers arrive, and they are bonded onto your teeth. Then you can finally smile with your finished smile.

Porcelain veneers do more than remake your teeth. They actually transform the shape of your face. As you age, your mouth loses elasticity and muscle tone, making your face less symmetrical. Veneers make you look younger by supporting your mouth’s musculature and accentuating your cheekbones.

The effect is similar to what you would get from a facelift. But unlike a facelift, veneers do not involve surgery. And thanks to temporary veneers, you can actually see what you are getting before it becomes permanent. This is a great advantage as you can actually make any changes and get the look you want before the final permanent veneers are placed.
