Looking to plump your lips? Fix your under-eye hollows? Restore facial fat loss? Dermal fillers are one of the key ways to accomplish all the above. At Haute Beauty expert Dr. Jeffey Ayers' Gallery of Aesthetics Medical Spa, dermal fillers are one of the hautest options, and there's a reason...

Did you know that there is a range of dermal fillers on the market? In fact, the most commonly used, especially at Dr. Ayers' medical spa contain hyaluronic acid (HA). Now, you may be familiar with HA in a different form. Whether that be in a serum you use every night or on its own, HA is the product that has evolved over time with new technology that improves the way it feels not only on your skin but under your skin, in filler form, and not to mention, how long it lasts.

Some of the factors that affect the duration and optimal location of use have to do with the size of the particles, the concentration of those particles, and how tightly they are bound to each other. In general dermal fillers, “fill” by three mechanisms, and the volume created by those factors resolves over different time periods.

  1. The tissue reaction from the needle entering the skin causes a short-term inflammatory response and generally fades within a week.
  2. The particles are delivered with a gel carrier, and this added volume fills the tissue lasting for several months.
  3. The particles within the filler are the main attraction, and they are hydrophilic, which means they attract water and hydrate the tissues in which they are placed.

Sadly, the vast majority of dermal fillers used are not permanent, and their duration is affected by the type of product and location treated. Based on those factors, we can generally see their duration ranging from six to 24 months. However, even with the fillers that could last up to two years, Dr. Ayers plans to retreat every 12 months (partial treatment) so patients do not lose the benefits they enjoy.

As mentioned, there are other fillers. The ones that do not have HA actually have the ability to stimulate cells that enhance the structure of the tissues, including collagen and elastin, in turn, reducing the signs of aging skin.

The bottom line is dermal fillers have benefits but just like anything, they also have risks, especially if you are going to providers that are new to products and procedure methods. If your provider does not understand the product's anatomy, where the most optimal location and what the depth might be, issues can arise. The most serious compilation is when the blood vessel is either blocked internally or compressed externally, preventing the appropriate blood flow. The loss of proper circulation may destroy the skin supplied by those vessels and even cause blindness.

To avoid any complications, consult with Dr. Ayers at Gallery of Aesthetics Medical Spa or a local provider today. With knowledge, comes power, and we at Haute Beauty urge you to know all the details of a successful "fill."
