When you hear the word rhinoplasty, you instantly think of the cosmetic changes that can be done to your nose. But, as accurate as that might be, rhinoplasty, better known as a nose job, presents additional benefits past the cosmetic look of your nose. Oftentimes, when Haute Beauty expert Dr. Jhonny Salomon is performing a rhinoplasty procedure, the nose's functional aspects can easily be corrected. The two most common are deviated septum and turbinate hypertrophy.
What is a deviated septum?
The septum is a large piece of cartilage that goes from the top of your nose's palate to the nose's dorsum. It helps support the nose and separate the two nostrils. Deviated septums can result from trauma or genetic reasons—both cause C or S deformities, impacting your ability to breathe.
A deviated septum can be assessed from the nose's outside and inside. Sometimes, you cannot see a deviated septum from the outside of the nose and vice versa. However, once Dr. Salomon asses both outside and inside the nose, he can see how bad the deviation is.

What are the additional benefits?
If your breathing is anatomical, this could be a direct result of your septum, turbinate, a combination of both, or allergies, which is the swelling of the nasal mucosa. However, if the breath is related to function and you correct the system, the turbinate should improve the airflow considerably.
In addition, some of the allergic rhinitis swellings could persist due to an allergic component. Though Dr. Salomon improves the internal anatomy of your nose at the time of the rhinoplasty, there are times when your breathing will not improve, especially if an allergic component causes it.
Now, if you can correct the anatomy and you are all clear of allergic rhinitis, and the airflow improves considerably, you'll experience benefits including:
- Increased comfort throughout your day-to-day activities
- Improved sleep and more restful nights
- More productive days
- Snoring lessens
In just a few weeks to a month, you will be able to see an improvement in your breathing. Dr. Salomon does not recommend using any nose sprays or additional measures after the procedure. It is best to allow your swelling and breathing to return to their terms.
