Dr. Amin Samadian, a leading comprehensive and advanced dentist in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a double graduate of Tehran Azad University and the University of the Pacific, Arthur Dugoni School of Dentistry. After being a clinical dentist for 7 years and finishing extensive training, he took over a well-established dental practice in Orinda, California and expanded in San Francisco, California, and became the third generation doctor who’s serving more than 3,000 patients in the community. Within his two practices, he established a new healthcare system, that provides a comprehensive dental, medical and cosmetic model that specializes in face and mouth reconstructions and rejuvenation. Haute Beauty expert Dr. Samadian discusses how Botox is used to relieve temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, and jaw tension.
Photo Credit: ShutterstockThe temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is a jaw joint that attaches the lower jaw to the skull. Trauma from a heavy bite or biting muscles that are too strong may extend the TMJ too far and lead to an acute or chronic facial injury. This disease is known as temporomandibular disorder or TMD. TMD also causes severe headaches, varying jaw pain, grinding teeth, and intermittent ear ringing.
BOTOX for TMJ/TMD
BOTOX is a substance composed of botulinum toxin, a purified compound that derives from bacteria. When it is injected into certain facial muscles, it can temporarily relieve TMJ and jaw tension.
Dr. Amin Samadian and his team may prescribe BOTOX for TMJ following his examination of your trigger pain points as part of his comprehensive, holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment. BOTOX for TMJ may be a viable treatment option in combination with anti-inflammatory drugs, gentle stretches of the jaw and neck, and stress reduction routines. Also, Dr. Samadian may create a custom night guard for you that will put the TMJ in a comfortable position and relieve your symptoms.
What Does TMJ/TMD Treatment Involve?
If Dr. Samadian and his team prescribe you to receive BOTOX treatment, after careful examination of the muscles and the TMJ itself, Dr. Amin Samadian’s team using a fine needle will inject BOTOX into the muscles that cause jaw pain and headaches. It is a non-invasive treatment that can be performed in less than half an hour and comes with no downtime.
Is TMJ/TMD Treatment Painful?
There is a minuscule amount of pain associated with the BOTOX TMJ Treatment procedure due to the injections, but it is generally insignificant and brief. Some patients have compared the BOTOX injection feeling to that of a “bug bite” or “prick”. Pain from the injection can be reduced by numbing the injection sites with a cold pack or anesthetic cream.
What Results Will I See?
While most BOTOX patients experience notable improvement in their TMJ pain within the first few days of their first treatment, it can take up to two weeks for you to experience the full relieving results. BOTOX for TMJ is a temporary treatment, so results will fade away after about a year. Bio-stimulation, on the other hand, requires 2-3 treatments, but results will be long-lasting once the treatments are complete.
