It can be difficult at times to embrace features that are tied to negative experiences that leave deep emotional scars. You may be blessed with a fast metabolism and clear skin but perhaps, you were given a prominent forehead. Unfortunately, not all feel confident enough to embrace the way they were born, which is where plastic surgeons can help. If you fall into this camp, forehead reduction is a safe and effective surgical procedure that can boost confidence, allowing patients to finally enjoy the appearance of their hairline.

Performed by a plastic surgeon, the hairline is repositioned lower on the forehead creating a more balanced appearance. Patients recover rapidly from surgery and see an immediate improvement in their overall facial aesthetics. “There is such a personal connection to the outcome,” says Dr. Karan Chopra. As such, he prioritizes candidates’ emotional and aesthetic needs during the individualized consultation process and creates a unique surgical strategy to achieve his patient’s vision.

HB: Who is an ideal candidate for the forehead reduction surgery?

A high hairline is commonly caused by genetic factors or hair loss from aging. This treatment is typically requested by patients who are personally displeased with a prominent forehead size. The ideal patient has a high hairline with ample skin elasticity that allows the hairline to be placed up to one inch lower in an effort to achieve their desired look. Any individual with wound healing abnormalities such as keloid scarring may be advised to consider other options.

A relatively shorter procedure, a forehead reduction surgery takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete. The patient is sedated with an on-site anesthesiologist and a local anesthetic is used to numb the entire forehead.

An incision is made at the front of the hairline so the skin marked for removal can be separated from the tissue. With care and precision, the scalp is brought forward and positioned lower typically ¾” up to 1” lower, on the forehead. To minimize scarring, a special suturing technique is used which seamlessly blends with new hair growth.

HB: What is recovery like after a forehead reduction procedure?

After the procedure is complete, the patient can return home within a few hours. At-home incision care is incredibly important and attention and detail should be used. Dr. Chopra provides specific cleaning instructions that should be followed leading up to the patient’s follow-up visit for suture removal approximately a week and a half post-operation. Patients are asked to return for check-ups at two and four weeks.

HB: How much does the forehead reduction procedure cost?

Dr. Karan Chopra recommends booking a one-on-one virtual or in-person consultation to discuss needs and the surgical strategy. From there, an estimate will be provided.
